Things are not always predictable or consitant with plots, so these hints and tips won't always help, but they should help you get started at least.

Hints from EA:

  • 5 on Friday Question: I'm seeing a lot of new faces (NPCs) related to the Inu the Crone plotline. Do you have any hints on more ways we can interact with them? Draconi: *smiles* When I meet new people, one of the first things I like to ask them is their name and a little about their job! This usually gives me enough that I can make much longer conversations with them, rather than just randomly saying something. Also, it really helps if I seem interested in what they're saying! If I just sat their and spit out one word responses to someone, they'd get tired of it pretty quick. So try to think about what they're saying, and sometimes phrase things with a few more words than you normally might - in fact, sometimes try to think of things that they didn't exactly say! Oh! Sometimes people like to receive gifts or have you run errands for them. Right now there might not be too many of that sort hanging about Inu, but you never know.

Hints from Players:

  • Read the responses NPCs give carefully. One response will often lead to another, and so on.
  • Understand the world the NPCs live in. They don't know what a computer is, and have probably only even heard of Earth through legends about "The Stranger", or in reference to the ground they walk on and not as a world.
  • Know Ultima lore. While the shards in UO do not follow the same story as occurred in "Ultima Prime" (the world you play on as "The Avatar" in the single-player Ultima games), there are often similarities. As time goes on in UO, more things that occurred in the later Ultima games are likely to also occur in the UO shards. Besides - even if the lore doesn't end up helping you, the games themselves are quite fun.
  • Know lore specific to Ultima Online. History has a habbit of repeating itself in games as well as in the real world. Good sources for this lore include UO Stratics' Town Crier archives, UO.com's BNN Archives, and by asking people who roleplay on the various shards.
  • If you think a place is a good area to check, or something would be a good word/phrase to trigger an NPC's response, but there isn't anything in the area or the NPC remains silent the first time you try... wait a day and try again. Sometimes things are delayed in being added, or are accidentally left out.
  • Don't necessarily play along with what the main characters in the plot seem to want. Sometimes not doing what seems to be what you are "supposed" to do will reveal alternate possibilities. Sometimes there won't be an alternate route, and you will be forced into continuing the story in a certain way, but that is not always the case.
  • Never play backgammon with a centaur.
