Hokuto is a Japanese shard and is named after the Japanese term for the Ursa Major or "Big Bear" star constellation that is more colloquially known as the "Big Dipper" in English.

Hokuto once had a large English-speaking population in addition to it's native Japanese players. Many of these players were American troops stationed on military bases on Okinawa or other Japanese bases. There were also a significant number of Australian players as well, but many of these relocated to the Australian shard, Oceania, once it opened on January 27, 2000.
