A Player Character, simply put, is an in-game Character that is played by a real person, or Player. This is as opposed to Non-Player Character (NPC), which is an in-game character that is played by the computer/server.
The term Player Character is very old role-playing game terminology, which goes back to tabletop Dungeons and Dragons games.
