Armor is the category of in game items that can be equipped by a character mostly for defensive purposes. It generally has Resistances and other Item Properties used by a character in combat. This distinguishes armor from clothing, which typically does not (there are exceptions, such as a few pieces made by Seers and Event Moderators over the years).
Armor Slots
Armor can first be categorized in a general sense by what armor slot it takes up on the paperdoll, which denotes what part of the body the armor is associated with. There are seven armor slots available:
- Helms / Hats & Masks (Head Slot)
- Gorgets / Necklaces (Neck Slot)
- Tunic (Chest Slot)
- Leggings (Legs Slot)
- Shields (Left Hand Slot)
- Sleeves (Arms Slot)
- Gloves (Hands Slot)
Armor Inherent Bonuses
As of Publish 81, armor provides players with inherent bonuses based on the type of armor and the amount of armor that is equipped. This feature replaces the former system that provided Mana phase and SSI debuffs.
Stamina Loss
Player’s stamina loss is influenced by the type of armor as well as the amount of armor that is equipped. Each piece of armor up to five pieces will reduce the amount of stamina lost when taking damage. The armor pieces which provide the most stamina loss reduction will take priority.
- Cloth armor, leather armor, and jewelry will give the same stamina loss reduction as Pub 80.
- Blacksmith armor (platemail, ringmail, chainmail, and dragon armor) will provide a heavy bonus to stamina loss reduction.
- Studded leather armor, stone armor, bone armor, woodland armor, and hide armor will provide a light bonus to stamina loss reduction.
Lower Mana Cost
Each piece of non medable armor provides lower mana cost with the exception of woodland armor. Each piece of armor up to five pieces provides a percentage which is still subject to the lower mana cost cap of 40. The armor pieces which provide the most lower mana cost will take priority.
- Platemail, ringmail, chainmail, and dragon armor provides 1% of lower mana cost per piece.
- Studded leather, hide armor, stone armor and bone armor provides 3% of lower mana cost per piece.
Suit Type
Some (but not all) types of armor can also be categorized more specifically by theme. Suits may or may not contain components for each equipment slot. For example, Leather Armor comes with a head covering while most other sets do not. Furthermore, some sets contain "alternative" Female Armor components.
Note that all types of armor in a given set come with the same basic resists. For example, a Platemail Gorget provides exactly the same level of protection as a Platemail Tunic. Armor that is Exceptionally crafted will receive a bonus that is further boosted by your character's Arms Lore skill, while Runic Tools can be used to send the total resistance level far higher.
Some forms of armor are "medable," meaning they do not affect your use of the Meditation skill when worn. Elven armor can only be worn by Elves. The same way, Gargish armor can only be worn by Gargoyles.
