In 2002, Lord Blackthorn's Revenge [1] introduced several previously unknown creatures, including the Swamp Dragon. Related to Dragons, the six-legged creatures first appeared during Blackthorn's attack on the City of Yew, when mounted Chaos Dragoons rode Swamp Dragons during their invasion of the City.Chaos Dragoons can still be found near the Ilshenar moongate of Honesty. Killing a Chaos Dragoon causes him to fall from his mount, thus leaving a Swamp Dragon that can be tamed. Animal Tamers must have a minimum skill of 93.9 to tame a Swamp Dragon. While a Chaos Dragoon can make their mounts perform fire and stomp attacks, tamed Swamp Dragons lose such abilities.
Fighting
Swamp Dragons are fairly easy to kill and deal little melee damage. While the reported damage dealt by a Swamp Dragon is 75% physical and 25% poison, they cannot poison their targets. They yield 5 green dragon scales and 20 normal leather hides when skinned.
Riding & Care
Unlike the other mounts that impart special benefits to their riders, such as the Cu Sidhe, Ki-Rin, and Unicorn, Swamp Dragons can be ridden by anyone, including young players. It should be noted that Ethereal Swamp Dragons cannot be ridden by anyone whose account is less than 5 years old.
Needless to say, Swamp Dragons eat meat.
Armor
As noted above, Swamp Dragons can be mounted when tamed, but perhaps their greatest known attribute is that the armored versions can partially absorb the damage inflicted upon a rider. Blacksmiths can craft a Dragon Barding Deed, which can be used on an unarmored, tame Swamp Dragon to turn it into an armored Swamp Dragon.
The armor will provide the rider of the dragon with extra protection in combat, this is done by absorbing a percentage of all damage received. Exceptional dragon barding allows a Swamp Dragon to absorb 20% of the damage inflicted upon the rider, while non-exemption barding provides only a 10% reduction. The damage reduction only works against monsters, not against players.
An armored Swamp Dragon will retain its armor upon resurrection. Colored armor imparts no more protection than iron armor; the use of colored ingots to produce dragon barding is for aesthetic reasons only. The barding can be removed from an armored Swamp Dragon by using a bladed item, however the Dragon Barding Deed will be lost upon removal. A Swamp Dragon's barding is subject to eventual damage and destruction, just like normal armor.
