Current in-game customer service/technical support is provided quite differently than in the past. [Circa Fall 1997] Calling, or paging, an in-game game master (GM) in the past did not put your request for assistance into the queue for an actual GM. Instead, your request went into a pre-queue, if you will, that was answered by a player volunteer, or counselor. If the counselor was unable to resolve the issue, then your request was transferred to the actual GM queue.

are the buffers between the player community and the GameMasters (GMs). They help the GMs to answer calls for help, to answer player queries if they can, help them resolve problems, and if they cannot, to pass the player's queries/problems to the GM to handle.

Counselors were of limited ability

This is what happens. You, the player, call the GM by pressing the Call GM button. Your name and the message you enter gets put into a queue for that particular server. That queue is managed by counselors firsthand. They, the counselors, are your first line of enquiry. A counselor who's logged in to the server will go to the top of the queue list and teleport to the player in question to help him or her out. If the counselor cannot help the player, eg it's a serious problem that only GMs can resolve, they transfer the player (data and location of the player etc) to the GM to resolve. The player can go about doing his business as the GM will teleport straight to the player.

A group of Ultima Online Counselors (those folks who volunteer their time to help you with any problems you may have while playing UO) filed a Class Action lawsuit in a Colorado district court yesterday, demanding "damages equal to three times Plaintiffs' unpaid minimum wage, and/or Plaintiffs' unpaid overtime compensation, as the case may be, attorneys' fees and costs, and injunctive relief," claiming that Origin and Electronic Arts were in, "violation of the minimum wage and overtime provisions of the FLSA" (Fair Labor Standards Act) and the Colorado Wage Act.

We're having a hard time figuring out why these people who signed up as volunteers are getting up in arms now about not getting paid. There may be more to this then just that, but from the outside looking in, it just seems like more people trying to cheat their way into more money.

While there's not much information on the Class Action suit as of yet, you can bet we'll be keeping a close eye on this one as the lawsuit moves forward.

Revolt in Britannia: UO Counselors Sue Origin and EA IGN Staff - September 20, 2000

A group of Counselors filed a class action lawsuit in a "Colorado district court" [check this, i bet it was a federal district court in Colorado, and not a Colorado State district court] on September 19, 2000. In their claim, they demanded "damages equal to three times Plaintiffs' unpaid minimum wage, and/or Plaintiffs' unpaid overtime compensation, as the case may be, attorneys' fees and costs, and injunctive relief," claiming that Origin and Electronic Arts were in violation of the minimum wage and overtime provisions of the federal Fair Labor Standards Act and the State of Colorado's Wage Act.
