Lake Austin is a North American shard and is named after a large reservoir formed from the Colorado River in Austin, Texas. The original offices for Origin Systems Incorporated were located along the banks overlooking the river. Lake Austin was launched on September 18, 2002 to roughly coincide with the 5th anniversary of Ultima Online.
