Drachenfels is a European shard and name means "Dragon's Rock" in German, which is a mountain in the Siebengebirge mountain range near Bonn, Germany. It was the first European shard and came out of testing on Thursday, October 22, 1998. The official Update message was as follows:

We're extremely pleased to announce the Grand Opening of our first European Shard, Drachenfels! This shard is no longer in testing, but is live and ready to be played upon for real! We are excited to provide this location for our dedicated European players as we endeavor to enhance our global service. We will be opening new shards in this area as demand dictates. In the meantime, we're having a celebration event on Drachenfels. Look for Sage Monique, in the Lycaeum, for details!

Players

On Drachenfels a large percentage of the players are German. Compared to other shards, the number of players on Drachenfels is low.
